It’s the moment every parent dreads — the discovery of tiny uninvited guests nestled in your child’s hair!
A few years ago, we had some rather unwelcome visitors in our home — the dreaded headlice! Despite my best efforts, they were determined to stay. Twice a week, I spent hours carefully combing through long hair, determined to win the fight. It felt like an endless battle!
It was during this time that I discovered a true hero — the Nitty Gritty comb. Along with lots of conditioner and patience, this magical comb finally helped me to win the battle, and at last, the persistent little pests were gone.
As I was researching headlice treatments, I stumbled across an article calling for the return of the Nit Nurse. I had completely forgotten about the Nit Nurse coming to my primary school! The memories flooded back — that sense of fear as the nurse appeared, the whispering about what she might find, and the collective relief (or embarrassment) that followed.
This mix of frustration, nostalgia, and humour sparked an idea — what if I turned our headlice ordeal into a funny, rhyming children’s book? I wanted to create something that families could relate to, laugh about, and perhaps even find a little comfort in. After all, dealing with headlice is rarely fun — but a good story can make it a little easier to handle.
My book follows the adventures of Nora, a friendly little headlouse who loves to explore. Through rhymes and amusing illustrations, it turns a common parenting ‘headache’ into a light-hearted tale that children can enjoy. It also offers some practical tips woven into the story, helping parents feel a little more prepared should they discover these unwanted little visitors!
Most children get nits at some point, and ‘Nora The Explorer’ aims to reassure them that it's nothing to be embarrassed about and is easy to deal with if necessary.
I can’t wait to share my book with you, and I hope it brings some smiles, laughs, and maybe even a few memories of your own encounters with the Nit Nurse!
